More than a Destination

Chagga Village is more than a destination — it's a living cultural heritage centre dedicated to preserving and sharing the traditions, stories, and ways of life of the Chagga people.
Our tours go beyond the typical. We invite you to step inside authentic Chagga life: to walk the same paths, learn from the same farmers, and drink from the same wells of history that have shaped this community for generations. Culture, nature, and history weave together across every experience we offer — from riverside hikes through ancient irrigation channels to evenings gathered around a roasting fire.

Explore

The landscape surrounding Chagga Village is as rich as its heritage. Babbling rivers, dramatic ravines, centuries-old mfereji (traditional irrigation channels), majestic waterfalls, towering trees, and sweeping banana and coffee farms set the scene — and beyond the hills, the Northern Circuit's wildlife sanctuaries await.
Our experienced cultural and safari guides are storytellers at heart. Whatever path you choose, they'll make sure every moment becomes a memory worth carrying home.
All tours are fully customisable for individuals, families, groups, and tour operators.

An immersive introduction to the living heritage of the Chagga people, right here at Chagga Village. Your visit includes a guided tour of a traditional Chagga hut — exploring its architecture, layout, and the rhythms of daily life within its walls. From there, step into our Cultural Historical Centre for a guided exhibition featuring Chagga artefacts, historical objects, and the customs that have defined this community across generations. You'll also witness a step-by-step demonstration of brewing mbege, the beloved traditional banana beer — and enjoy a live presentation on the history of coffee in Kilimanjaro, culminating in a traditional Chagga coffee-making demonstration that ends with a taste you won't forget.
A walk that connects you to the land and the people who have shaped it. Set off along a rustic trail through the surrounding villages, pausing to meet and interact with local community members along the way. En route, you'll encounter one of the region's most remarkable cultural landmarks — a centuries-old mfereji (traditional irrigation channel), an ingenious feat of engineering that still flows today and stands as a proud symbol of Chagga ingenuity and heritage. The hike continues to a scenic nearby river, where the landscape opens up and the pace of modern life feels very far away.
A trail steeped in legend, leading to one of the area's most quietly spectacular hidden gems. Walk through picturesque Chagga villages on your way to Kisanja Cascade — a serene waterfall with a layered history. Once believed to be the dwelling of spirits, later used as a site of spiritual cleansing, and eventually harnessed by the Catholic mission as a clean water source for the local community, Kisanja carries centuries of meaning in its mist. Along the way, you'll visit a historic Catholic church and receive a guided tour of the first Catholic mission in Uru East — a fascinating window into the interplay of culture, faith, and community that has shaped this region.
One of the most spectacular natural landmarks on the slopes of Kilimanjaro — and an adventure that begins right at Chagga Village. Journey through fertile Chagga farmlands, charming hillside villages, and forested trails as you make your way to the magnificent Materuni Waterfall. The route — whether walked, driven, or a combination of both — is as rewarding as the destination itself. The experience includes a picnic lunch served at a scenic viewpoint: the perfect way to pause, take it all in, and savour the moment.
Descend into one of the most extraordinary chapters of Chagga history. The Underground Chagga Cave is a hand-carved subterranean dwelling where early Chagga families once sought shelter and safety. Guided through its distinct spaces — living and sleeping quarters, a cooking hearth, an animal shelter, and a secret passageway that leads to the river — you'll gain a rare and intimate understanding of the resourcefulness and resilience that define the Chagga spirit.

Cultural Activities

A celebration of Chagga tradition, built around fire, food, and community. As a whole goat slow-roasts over an open fire, the evening comes alive around it — with storytelling, mbege tasting, and vibrant traditional dance performances. What begins as anticipation builds into a shared feast that is as much about togetherness and culture as it is about the meal itself. The Ndafu Feast is an unforgettable evening, and a genuine expression of the Chagga spirit of hospitality.
Available for groups.
Roll up your sleeves and cook the Chagga way. This hands-on session brings you into the heart of Chagga culinary tradition — using time-honoured methods, open fire, and fresh local ingredients. You'll take an active part at every stage: preparing the ingredients, building the fire, and cooking the meal from scratch. Together, guests prepare a spread of beloved dishes including Mtori, Pilau, Chapati, and Chicken Curry — and then sit down to enjoy everything they've made. Warm, communal, and genuinely delicious.
