History & Heritage Tour
On arrival at Chagga Village, you'll be welcomed with a refreshing soft drink before your guide introduces you to the story of Chagga Village. The tour takes you through a traditional Chagga hut and a curated exhibition of local artefacts and historical items in our cultural centre. You'll then take part in hands-on demonstrations of mbege (banana beer) brewing and traditional coffee preparation — both of which you get to taste. The experience concludes with a vibrant performance of traditional Chagga dance.
Hike Down the River & Community Interaction
After a welcome and guide briefing on arrival at Chaga Village, you'll step into the rhythm of everyday Chagga life with visits to local homes and meaningful interactions with community members. The walk then descends along a rustic trail through the ravine adjacent to Chagga Village, leading down to the Mrusunga River that flows from the melting ice on the peak of Kilimanjaro. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the centuries-old Mfereji — a traditional Chagga irrigation channel that stands as both an ingenious feat of engineering and an enduring symbol of Chagga heritage.
Materuni Waterfall Hike
When you arrive at Chagga Village by 9:00 am, our team will welcome you and introduce you to your guide for the day. After a brief orientation, you will set off on a rewarding full-day journey through the fertile farmlands, charming villages, and forested trails that drape the slopes of Kilimanjaro.
After approximately two hours of hiking, the trail opens up to the magnificent Materuni Waterfall — one of the most spectacular natural landmarks in the region. A warm picnic lunch and bottled water are served at a scenic viewpoint, giving you time to soak in the surroundings before the return journey to Chagga Village.
This is a full-day hike of approximately 8 hours. Comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are recommended.
Kisanja Waterfall Hike
On arrival at Chagga Village, you will be warmly welcomed by our team and introduced to your guide for a briefing before setting off. The hike winds through picturesque Chagga villages on a relaxed 45-minute walk to the serene Kisanja Cascade — a hidden gem along the trail to Materuni Waterfall.
Kisanja is a place steeped in legend. Once believed to be the dwelling of spirits and later used as a site of spiritual cleansing, the waterfall was eventually harnessed by the Catholic mission as a clean water source for the local community. En route, you will visit a historic Catholic church and receive a guided tour of the first Catholic mission in Uru East — a fascinating window into the area's cultural and religious heritage.
Snacks and soft drinks are served along the way to keep you refreshed.
Upon returning to Chagga Village, guests may opt for lunch or dinner depending on the time of the hike.
Interactive Culinary Workshop
On arrival at Chagga Village, you will be greeted by our team and introduced to your cooking instructor for an overview of the session ahead. This is a truly hands-on experience — you will roll up your sleeves and take an active part in every stage, from preparing the ingredients and building the fire to the cooking itself.
Using traditional techniques and fresh local produce, you will learn to prepare a selection of beloved dishes including Mtori, Pilau, Chapati, and Chicken Curry. Once the cooking is done, sit down and savour the meal you have made — a satisfying reward for your efforts.
The full workshop runs approximately 3 hours
Ndafu Feast Experience
On arrival at Chagga Village, you will be welcomed by our team and introduced to your feast chef, who will walk you through the evening ahead. You will then make your way to the feast site, where the experience begins with the slaughtering, skinning, and marinating of the goat — a process you are welcome to observe or actively join.
As the goat slow-roasts over an open fire, the atmosphere comes alive with storytelling, mbege tasting (a traditional Chagga banana brew), and vibrant dance performances. The evening builds to a shared feast that is as much about community and culture as it is about food — an unforgettable celebration of Chagga tradition.
This is an evening group experience for a minimum of five guests, running approximately 3 hours
Underground Chagga Cave Tour
Following a welcome on arrival, you'll travel twenty minutes to reach the underground cave site, where your guide will meet you for the journey ahead. Together you'll descend into the Underground Chagga Cave — a remarkable hand-carved dwelling that once sheltered entire families. The tour moves through its distinct spaces: living and sleeping areas, a cooking hearth, an animal shelter, and a secret passageway that leads directly to the river. Each chamber offers a vivid window into the ingenuity and resilience of those who built and inhabited this hidden world.
